Herpes simplex viruses (HSV)

Posted by Aanvullen

Genital herpes is caused by infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV, HSV-1 and HSV-2, both of which belong to a wider group called Herpesviridae. Another well-known virus in this group is varicella zoster virus, which causes chicken-pox and shingles. In general:
HSV-1 is acquired orally, causing cold sores.
SV-2 is acquired during sexual contact and affects the genital area.
Although genital herpes used to almost always be caused by HSV-2 infection, HSV-1 is accounting for an increasing number of cases of genital herpes in developed countries. Only around 10-25 percent of people infected with HSV-2 are aware they have genital herpes. This is because genital herpes will often produce mild symptoms or no symptoms at all (asymptomatic infection). As a result, many cases of genital herpes go undiagnosed and frequently people unknowingly pass the virus on to their sexual partners.
If symptoms do occur, they will usually appear 2 to 7 days after exposure and last 2 to 4 weeks. Both men and women may have one or more symptoms, including:
  • Itching or tingling sensations in the genital or anal area;
  • small fluid-filled blisters that burst leaving small painful sores (seeSTD pictures);
  • pain when passing urine over the open sores (especially in women);
  • headaches;
  • backache;
  • flu-like symptoms, including swollen glands or fever.
Subsequent outbreaks are usually milder and last for a shorter period of time, usually 3 to 5 days. The sores are fewer, smaller, less painful and heal more quickly, and there are no flu-like symptoms. Subsequent outbreaks, or primary outbreaks in people who have had the virus for some time but have previously been asymptomatic, usually occur during periods of stress or illness when the immune system is functioning less efficiently than normal.

Methemoglobinemia

Posted by Aanvullen

The diagnosis of methemoglobinemia should be considered in patients presenting with cyanosis and hypoxia. A variety of frequently used medications are capable of inducing methemoglobinemia, with dapsone and benzocaine being common culprits. Unique features, such as a saturation gap and chocolate-brown-colored blood, can raise suspicion for methemoglobinemia. Typically, symptoms correlate with the methemoglobin level, and treatment with methylene blue is reserved for patients with significantly elevated methemoglobin levels. In the presence of comorbid conditions that impair oxygen transport, however, low-grade methemoglobinemia can become symptomatic and may warrant treatment.

What is forskolin?

Forskolin (7 beta-acetoxy-8, 13-epoxy-1 alpha,6 beta,9 alpha-trihydroxy-labd-14-ene-11-one) is the main active ingredient in the Ayurvedic herb Coleus forskohlii. Coleus is a member of the mint family and grows in subtropical areas in India, Burma, and Thialand. Forskolin has been extensively researched. It has also recently gained popularity as a fat loss agent.

What other benefits does forskolin have?
  • Cardiovascular health - Many studies have shown forskolin, as well as other actives in Coleus forskohlii, support cardiovascular health.

 Are there any side effects?

There are no major side effects reported in the literature, but you should consult a doctor before using forskolin if you are being treated for any conditions listed where drug interactions may occur. Large doses of forskolin will also probably make one drowsy, as it is an antihistamine. If this becomes a problem, one can reduce dosage, take it in combination with a stimulant, and/or take it before bed.

What are some good supplements to take along with forskolin?

Since there are still no strong clinical trials supporting the use of forskolin for weight loss yet, it is most commonly used as an adjunct to a weight loss regimen rather than a primary strategy. In studies, it is usually used along with a lipolytic hormone, so it may operate synergistically with a supplement that increases lipolytic hormone levels. Some of the best products containing forskolin in an adequate dosage are SAN Tight, or ISS Lipovar 8.

Ectopia Cordis

Posted by Aanvullen

Ectopia cordis is an extremely rare congenital heart malformation that remains very difficult to treat. Occurrence is .79 in every 10,000 births. In ectopia cordis, the heart forms outside of the chest wall, so it is not protected by the skin or sternum. Other organs may also have formed outside the skin. To further complicate this difficult presentation, the heart itself is generally improperly formed. It may have defects like Tetralogy of Fallot, pulmonary atresia, atrial and ventricular septal defects, or double outlet right ventricle, among others. Along with heart malformations, children with ectopia cordis may also have cleft palates. The spine can also be formed improperly, causing kyphosis, too great of a C curvature in the thoracic spine.
There is some slim evidence that ectopia cordis may be related to Turner Syndrome. Chromosomal anomalies like Trisomy 18 have also been observed in some children withectopia cordis. In general, however, there is no recognizable cause for this condition. In one way, this may be comforting to parents who have had a child with ectopia cordis. The condition is unlikely to repeat in future children. Sadly, most cases of ectopia cordis result in stillbirth or death shortly after birth. A few cases of ectopia cordis have been treated successfully, but this defect still poses the biggest challenge and rate of failure for pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons.
Most cases of ectopia cordis are identified through routine prenatal ultrasound. When a case is suspected, the mother will be referred to a pediatric or fetal echocardiologist who will confirm the diagnosis. To give the child the best possible chance at survival, the baby will be born at a Level 3 hospital, where experienced pediatric cardiologists and surgeons are on hand to immediately address the problems. Birth may be vaginal or Caesarian, as indicated by the high-risk obstetrician.
Parents who receive early diagnosis of ectopia cordis have the option to induce labor early or to have a therapeutic abortion performed. Parents who choose induced labor expect fatality, but may find comfort in naturally giving birth to a child, having a chance to see and hold that child and to say goodbye. Other parents prefer to end the child’s life without holding or seeing him or her. They find this option less painful than continuing the pregnancy. This difficult decision should be carefully weighed with the help of a skilled counselor.
When parents choose to wait and see if their child can be treated, success of treatment depends on the severity of other heart defects, as well as other related problems. In most cases, cardiothoracic surgeons attempt repair of the heart defects before covering the heart and organs with prosthetic skin. Unfortunately, the valves leading to the heart, once replaced inside the chest wall, can kink and cause death. An overwhelming number of birth defects in a child with ectopia cordis can also make repair impossible, and parents may simply choose to do nothing, called compassionate care, rather than subject their child to serious medical interventions with little hope of success.
Those parents who elect treatment may feel a sense of relief even when treatment fails. Treatment can offer parents a sense that they have done everything possible to save their child. With any option, the death of a child is a weighty emotional burden. Seeking help from organizations like Hospice and working with grief counselors can assist over time with the overwhelming feelings of loss.
Though very rare, treatment of ectopia cordis clearly needs greater research to improve outcome. Fetal surgery is still relatively new, but attempting repair prior to birth may be beneficial, and this should be studied for potential value. (http://www.wisegeek.com)

Feverfew

Posted by Aanvullen

Feverfew is an herb. The leaves are used to make medicine. Feverfew has many uses, but so far, it seems to be effective only for preventing migraine headaches in some people. Feverfew is also used for fever, irregular menstrual periods, arthritis, a skin disorder called psoriasis, allergies, asthma, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), dizziness, and nausea and vomiting. Some people use feverfew for difficulty getting pregnant or fathering a child (infertility). It is also used for “tired blood” (anemia), cancer, common cold, earache, liver disease, prevention of miscarriage, muscular tension, bone disorders, swollen feet, diarrhea, upset stomach and intestinal gas. Feverfew is sometimes applied directly to the gums for toothaches or to the skin to kill germs. You may not get your money’s worth from all feverfew products. Some feverfew tablet products can contain little or no feverfew.

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates effectiveness based on scientific evidence according to the following scale: Effective, Likely Effective, Possibly Effective, Possibly Ineffective, Likely Ineffective, Ineffective, and Insufficient Evidence to Rate.

The effectiveness ratings for FEVERFEW are as follows:

Possibly effective for :

  • Preventing migraine headache. There is some evidence that taking feverfew by mouth can reduce the frequency of migraine headaches and reduce pain, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and noise when they do occur. Feverfew may be more effective in people with more frequent migraine attacks. But there are also studies that concluded that feverfew doesn’t work for migraines. The difference in results may be explained by the differences in feverfew products that were tested.
    The Canadian government allows manufacturers of a certain feverfew formulation (containing 0.2% of a chemical called parthenolide) to claim that their product can be used to prevent migraines.

Possibly ineffective for :

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Taking feverfew by mouth doesn't seem to reduce the symptoms of RA.

Insufficient evidence to rate effectiveness for :

  • Fever.
  • Menstrual irregularities.
  • Arthritis.
  • Psoriasis.
  • Allergies.
  • Asthma.
  • Dizziness.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Earache.
  • Cancer.
  • Common cold.
  • Other conditions.

Carnosine

Posted by Aanvullen

Carnosine supplement review, 250 mg, 500 mg dosage, benefit as antioxidant, for cataract and Parkinson's disease, this nutrient has a number of health benefits that are just beginning to be explored. Carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) is a natural antioxidant found in the body and also available through foods and supplements. It can help reduce glycation.

Properties

Camosine is a naturally occurring, water-soluble dipeptide. It has buffering activities in excitable animal and human tissues, exhibits metal ions binding properties, antioxidant and antiglycating properties, extends the life-span of cultured human diploid cells, regulates sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium-release channel activity. Carnosine may be a potential therapeutic agent (neurodegenerative, metabolic, cardiovascular diseases) mainly due to its antioxidant and antiglycating activities.

Health benefit

Carnosine is found exclusively in animal tissues, such as brain and skeletal muscle tissues. It is a potent hydrophilic antioxidant, antiglycating agent, reactive oxygen species scavenger and pH-buffer. Carnosine has potential benefits in many diseases of central nervous system, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and cerebral ischemic diseases. Only a few human studies have been published regarding the health benefits. The early research looks quite promising.

Athletics and exercise

Using carnosine and natural antioxidants for the prophylaxis of acute post-loading oxidative stress.Eksp Klin Farmakol. 2007;. The effects of a submaximum single physical load with a mixed aerobic-anaerobic character (combined rowing test) on the intensity of lipid peroxidation (LPO) processes, antioxidant state of the organism, and rheological properties of blood have been studied in a group of athletes. The administration of natural antioxidants significantly decreased the LPO stress induced by the physical load, reduced the suppression of the antioxidant system of the organism, and normalized the LPO-disturbed hemorheological parameters. Antioxidants such as carnosine, cytamine, and apilac can be used as non-doping means for the accelerated recovery and increase in the physical work capacity in athletes.

Carnosine side effects, is it safe?

No major side effects have been reported in medical journals with this dipeptide supplement. One short term adverse effect is alertness and shallow sleep when very high dosages are supplemented.

TCU Drug Bust: . . . for Football Players Caught?

Posted by Aanvullen

The college football off-season is a time to pick up recruits, get ready for spring and try to put together the best depth chart possible for next year. It's a time to get excited about the ossibilities that next year will bring. The TCU football program is likely doing those things, but they have a few distractions to take care of first. Distractions that include a total of 17 students being arrested in a drug sting that was set up following a six-month investigation. Four current football players were among the 17 that were arrested and they include Tanner Brock, Devin Johnson, D.J. Yendrey and Tyler Horn.
Now according to the report, only five players tested positive for marijuana on a test that took place on Feb. 1. A total of 11 others had trace amounts within margin of error. It's unknown if any of the players that were caught in this drug sting were among the five players that tested positive. But what happens to the players that were caught and or tested positive for drugs?
Well, according to the TCU athlete student handbook, the athletic director and head coach of the program are first notified. They are then sent to counseling, put on probation with random testing and they face possible expulsion, revocation of scholarship and could even be dismissed from the team all together. The punishments are even more severe if the school finds out a student or student-athlete was dealing drugs, as it appears there is zero tolerance for distribution.
